Coming out of the cold & dreary days, what does the word spring conjure up for you?
I have never been a seasonal decorator except during winter, I have a lot of throws around & festivals of course get special treatment. Other than that, I have never swapped out pillows or cushions when the season changes. I don’t even have extra stuff in storage, what you see now in my home is what I have.
But over the last couple of years, I have grown to appreciate the effect of change & the freshness things like candles & flowers bring around the house. Before, I could probably count on my fingers the number of times I have gotten fresh flowers. Not that I don’t like flowers. I just prefer my flowers on plants. But my daughter just loves to have flowers around. She picks them up from our garden & from parks, brings them home carefully and goes around the house arranging them in small cups & vases, all the while humming a tune. How adorable is that? She is the reason I started getting fresh flowers. When we go grocery shopping, she hangs around patiently till the very end when we get to the flower section. Once there, she jumps out of the cart, goes around inspecting the selection and even reasons with me why we should get that particular bunch that week. I am constantly amazed at the things I am learning from this tiny human, forcing to get me off my high horse that I as the parent can dictate everything around my home.
So, this spring & summer, I am exploring with flowers & floral arrangements for the first time!
Fragrances – which is often overlooked but its the first thing to hit you as soon as you enter a space. All the visual treats you have around fails if there isn’t a scent that matches your home vibe.
Bringing in colors in the form of art.
Different fabrics & texture – the addition of velvet curtains adds a subtle touch of luxury to the space and the addition of kilim pillows for more pattern & texture. I like the long lumbar pillows – it packs in a punch while keeping things simple.
Feeling more adventurous experimenting with darker shades.
And of course – bring on the jungalicious vibes indoors!
In short, for me, this spring & summer its all about learning the art of layering & catering to the tactile senses – scents, touch & little such nuances around the home.
