Sun room makeover

It’s hard not to say this about every room, but the sunroom is hands down our favorite. Not just us, to our friends & even to first timers as well.
People just tend to gravitate towards the sunroom. Even before it was all decked up, this room
with windows on 3 sides, with views of the lush green backyard, had a very inviting & casual vibe to it.
It was a no brainer here to have an informal seating here with day-bed & some floor seating as well.
Something that I do not show much is that, this is also the playroom of my daughter. Her toys are kept in the corners that are not visible
from the living room. So it made complete sense to go with no fuss setting here.

In all it’s glory!

The room has evolved a lot over the years. Initially it was just the daybed which is just a tiwn bed (on a box spring) with printed cotton sheets & cushions.
Then I added a couple of floor cushions. These are up-cycled cushions from my old couch with a cotton sheets wrapped around them.
Very casual, easy to maintain yet dreamy enough to zone out with a coffee and comfortable enough to sit with my laptop on WFH days.
Plants are of course the star of this room. With the abundant sunshine, it’s an ideal spot for my tropical plants.
The Bird of paradise, the first to come in, was hardly 3 ft tall then and the frangipani was just a stick in a pot! There was a definite bohemian vibe building in here. The 3 hanging terracotta shades went up and the charm & coziness
it adds is just magical. It has wired puck lights inside them. It is divine to sit here with a cup of coffee with just these lights at dawn or dusk.
The wires are a spoiler though. But when I was choosing these lights couple years
back, the options were either wired & battery operated. With the whole theme of being sustainable, I chose the wired ones. The chargeable puck lights
I used for the dancing puppets wall weren’t available then.

Working hard or hardly working!?

With all this done, the sunroom looked great when you walk into it. But when you turned around, there was this big blank beige wall that was begging
for some help. I had some frames on it at one point but it din’t go well with the room & was eventually removed.
Fast forwarding to now, we recently painted this wall with Behr Dark Jade. This is a green color with blue undertones.
It looks light jade during the daytime, but as it starts getting darker, the blue undertones start to dominate.
The decision to go with this color was mainly due to the fact that this is not a big room. Painting the big wall with any other color (in my opinion)
would have made it look smaller. Painting it green seemed logical as it ties the green from outside with the plants inside the room and gives
a overall cohesive look.

Before – The big blank beige wall
Freshly painted! This picture was taken when it was almost dark & looks darker compared to the picture below which was taken with full sunlight on it.
After!
How I had the sheets draped before – The boxspring underneath was showing & it was not the prettiest setup.
Small changes that make a big impact! The printed sheet draped over the boxspring & the blush pink draped over the mattress gives the diwan a much cleaner put-together look.

The black & white printed sheet just plopped on the diwan was still irking me. It looked like a giant blob. As the day bed is just a mattress on a
box, I had the old printed sheet draped on the boxspring and a blush pink sheet on the matress. This gives bed structure and also pulls the color
scheme together.

The mirror on the wall is a facebook marketplace find. When I saw the listing, I was envisioning it for another wall. But owing to
my supreme calculations, it turned out to be too big for that spot. Originally I had
plans to build a vertical planter on the green wall (I might still do that!). But plans change & isnt that the whole beauty of the process.
For now the mirror is at home completing the indo-bohemian sunroom look!

Not a dull moment around here!

How to hang the pendant lamps from ceiling:
Probably one of the most asked question. I used “White Enamel Swag Hooks” (Link down in sources section). These can be used in both hollow & solid walls. In case of hollow walls (which is what I have), no drilling is required. You just screw them in! There are a lot of similar stuff available on the market based on the weight of the object you are going to hang.

How to hang the mirror (or any heavier object):
The mirror is quite heavy and as it hangs right above the daybed, it was very essential that we had it tightly secured. I used “Tool Free Picture Hanger” for this (Link down in Sources section). Historically, I would have drilled, used an anchor & nail. Well, technology has gotten so advanced – this is like a push pin but for heavier objects. The hole it makes are small too, probably can use it in rentals as well. I used 2 of these because I am paranoid like that πŸ™‚

Demonstration to show that it is indeed tool free!

Plants:

  • Right corner – Bird of paradise
  • Left (by the window) – Frangipani
  • Left (on the gold sidetable) – Monstera deliciosa

This is the evolution of the sunroom decor. It is cozy, comfy and I did not spend a lot to achieve it! Hope this inspires you to set up your space!
