How To Make Beeswax Candles

With the upcoming festival season, we are all getting ready with our finest festive attires, pulling the brassware out, preparing the menus, planning decorations, it is indeed a joyous time of the year! You can catch up on my previous posts on how to host your parties in an eco friendly way here, here and here. In this part of the series I am going to bring you a brilliant return gift idea for your guests – Beeswax candles in terracotta jars .This is handmade but hardly takes any time or effort at all, made with natural materials & is definitely unique.

Why is this handmade gift special? Even thought you could get candles for a dime a dozen, there is a certain charm & thoughtfulness that comes along with these handmade candles. First, they are poured in terracotta kulhads which is just perfect for the festive season. You can customize the scent as per the individual needs of your guests or seasonal scents with essential oils.

It is extremely simple & comes together in no time – All you need are Beeswax, coconut oil & wicks. Melt it all together & pour it in! Cocoa butter is optional but something that I highly recommend. Even with no added scents, just the aroma of cocoa butter mixed with that of the burnt clay (from the kulhads) is ???. Also, You can make them way ahead & that definitely reduces last minute stress.

This one is not just for gifting – make one (or more!) for yourselves too!

Candles add a lot of warmth to the space

Now let’s jump right into the steps.

Ingredients:

  1. 1 lb. Beeswax pellets – https://amzn.to/2F4Cqkl
  2. 1/2 cup Coconut oil – https://amzn.to/3nqgVvs
  3. 1/2 to 1 cup Cocoa butter – https://amzn.to/3d02Z6P
  4. Candle wicks – https://amzn.to/34pOzsQ
  5. Containers – Terracotta Kulhads or glass jars – I love the rustic aroma of burnt clay. You can also make them in glass mason jars. (https://amzn.to/3jGoxb9) or reuse any old glass containers too.
  6. Optional Essential oils – https://amzn.to/2SABdVa – this jasmine scent is simply divine or something season like this fall scent – https://amzn.to/2Ip0EqB

Steps:

  1. Clean & wipe the containers and attach the bottom part of the wick to the base of the container with some glue. To make the wick stand straight & centered, roll the top to a stick placed on top.

Terracotta & glass jars with the wicks secured.

2. Combine the beeswax pellets, coconut oil & cocoa butter in a double warmer. A double warmer is when you place the contents to be melted in a bowl over a bowl of boiling water. This is to make sure you don’t put the contents directly on heat rather use the steam from the boiling water underneath it.

3. Once it has all melted, you can add the essential oils if you want to. You would need to add about 25 – 30 drops to get a good result.

4. Pour the melted wax in your containers & let it rest to about 10 – 20 minutes for it to solidify and set.

5. After the candles set, unwrap the wicks and cut them to the desired length.

6. For an additional touch when gifting, I have covered the tops with some bright fabrics that I had leftover from an old project.

Store bought candles are mostly made from paraffin wax. Beeswax is 100% natural & if you can get it from your local bee keeper there is nothing like it! This holiday season lets indulge in clean handmade items for you and your friends & family!
